Slavery, Capitalism, and the New Moralism

For the past six years or so, I have been researching American slavery, just at the time when this topic has become a political hot potato. I’ve become worried that moralistic language and attitudes, however well intended, will interfere with scholarship and make it more difficult to research certain aspects of slavery, or relate certain findings. It is important that historians allow debate and don’t police each other’s language or quickly call into question the motives of other researchers. On this topic, I recently wrote an article titled “Slavery, Capitalism, and the New Moralism” for the Liberty Fund. You can read it here: https://oll.libertyfund.org/liberty-matters/2023-10-05-why-we-don-t-need-a-new-history-of-capitalism#post_584
